Gaston - n. a climbing technique that involves sidepulling with an elbow pointed outward.
Gate - n. The hinged and sometimes bezelled or screw threaded part of the Karabiner that opens inwards to allow the Karabiner to be clipped onto a bolt or other protection.
Gear Loops - n. Stiff fabric or plastic loops on a climbing harness or bandolier/sling that allow the climber to clip protection (Cams, Karabiners etc) onto to allow them to carry equipment up the climb and to be in easy reach.
Gear Sling – n. Nylon or fabric loop worn over one shoulder with loops in it to carry additional gear up a rock face. Often worn by the lead climbing when setting out the protection of a route. Sometimes referred to as a Bandolier.
Girth Hitch – n. Knot – also referred to as a Larks Foot Knot.
Glacier – n. An immense field or stream of ice, formed in the region of perpetual snow, and moving slowly down a mountain slope or valley, as in the Alps, or over an extended area, as in Greenland.
Glissade – n. A natural slide down a snow slope. To slide.
Greasy - adj. Slippery, condition of the rock when the climb has either constant water running over it which leaves algae and slime, or the condition of the holds on a popular rock face when the chalk in the holds mix with rain water.
Greenpoint - n. This is the act of completing a top-roped route from bottom to top without once falling or hangdogging. Often referred to as “Flashing the route.”
Gripped - adj. A mixture of being tired and scared. e.g. “I got tot the last part of the ascent eventually but the crux left me gripped.”
Guide Book - n. A book which shows where climbing routes are located and gives brief descriptions of the route and its difficulty.
Gumby - adj. A (often derogatory) name for a beginner or novice climber. “The route was a wash with bloody gumby’s.”
Gym - n. American term given to an indoor climbing facility consisting of manmade walls. UK it is called a climbing wall or indoor wall.
