Jamming - v. Term given to placing a foot, hand or fingers into a crack or gouge in a rock face to maintain a hold.
Jippy - v. Becoming scared or apprehensive during an ascent. “Tony blasted the first part of the ascent but became jippy when he got to the crux.”
Jug - n. a large easy to hold feature in a rock, particularly in a cave or overhang with is a deep hand hold. Americans refer to this as a bucket. 2. (vb.) to use jummars to ascend a rope.
Jugging - v. See jumaring... 2. – v the act of traversing a cave ceiling using nothing more than deep hand holds (jugs).
Jumar - n. A device with a handle and a toothed cam that bites the rope when weighted used to ascend a fixed rope. Replaced prussik knots in the 60's, and was one of only two mechanical ascenders on the market for years. Useless on iced ropes. Also a verb meaning “to jumar.” “I was jumaring when it started to rain.”
Jumaring - v. Ascending a rope using jumars.
