‘Larry Lob’ - n. Abbreviation of ‘Larry Lobotomy’ – individual who risks their and others safety on a climb by not thinking and pulling off or attempting to pull off a risky move. Usually does this a considerable distance from a Mountain Rescue station.

Lay back - n/vb. a move requiring pulling with arms to the side and pushing with the feet in the opposite direction often used when climbing a vertical crack. Strenuous but strong and effective hold. (syn. lieback)

Lead - vb/n. to be the first of a team to climb starting with the rope on the ground clipping into protection points on the way up. 2. – n to be or to be nominated the first to climb.

Lead Climber – n. The first climber up the ascent who places protection on the route and clips in the rope.

Leader - n. The climber who ascends a route first putting up the rope and protection.

Ledge - n. A horizontal cut or projection forming a shelf on a cliff or rock wall.

Lever - n. A hangboard exercise involving a person hanging by both arms and 'levering' their body into a completely horizontal position. This requires very strong abdominal muscles.

Leverage - n. The action of the climbing rope on protection placed in the rock, this action can cause the protection to work loose.

Locker – n. Large cavity in a rock face that a climber can stand or sit in.

Locking Carabiner - n A Karabiner with either a screw gate or twist lock, locking mechanism. A locking karabiner is used with a stitch plate or belay device to clip it to the belayers harness.

Lower Off - v. To come down from a route after reaching the top or not being able to climb anymore.

Lowering Off - v. The act of descending climbers and kit down from a route after reaching the top or not being able to climb anymore. “ Jack got lowered off when he bailed the first ascent.”

Lower Off Point - n. Fixed or placed protection placed on some point of a climb for use when lowering off. Agreed point on a route or big wall climb where climbers and kit will meet to be lowered off.
