Mallion Rapides - n. A distinct type of karabiner that is screwed shut with a wrench. Also refered to as a Quick-Link.

Manky - adj. The opposite of Bombproof or solid. A piece of gear is said to be manky if it is not placed well and could fall out at any moment. 2. Condition of rock. If the rock face is considered manky it is often a dirty climb with a lot of vegetation or slime on holds etc.

Mantel - n./vb. a climbing technique involving the transfer of upward force from a pulling action to a pushing action, often used to get onto a ledge.

Match - v. To place both hands or both feet on the same hold.

Metolius - n. A respected brand of climbing hardware.

Mixed Climbing - adj. Refers to a route with both rock and ice sections. May also refer to a route with both sport and trad sections. Often requires the use of more protection or gear carried by the climber.

Mono / Monodoigt - n. French for "one finger" pocket, a pocket in which only one finger can fit. Yes it does hurt.

Morris - n. Affectionate term for an older climber with old fashioned ways and gear. Usually found at the bottom of routes, tutting at the youth of today and their new wave gear and telling you how climbing should be done or was done when he was a lad. “I was having a good day, particularly when that Morris was telling me he climbed this route in hob-nailed boots and a rucksack.”

Mountaineering - n. The climbing of mountains for sport, usually incorporating the skills of rock climbing and climbing on ice.

Mountain Climber - n. Person who climbs mountains or rock faces for sport.

Move - n. Refers to the motion between holds. ie; "The move between the ledge and the left crack is difficult.”

Multi Pitch Climb - n. A climb with more than one pitch, or rope length. Something savoured by big wall climbers who can spend days on a rock face.

Münter hitch - n. The Münter hitch is a set of wraps using a rope or cord around an object, generally round like a pipe, pole or more common, a carabiner. Its main use is as a friction device for controlling the rate of descent in belay systems.
