Tie an Alpine Butterfly Knot

A knot for creating a loop in the middle of a rope, using less rope and having greater load bearing potential. Very easy to untie even after taking a load and does not distort or slacken when forces are applied.

Step One:

Figure 1: Lay the rope across the middle of your palm.
Figure 2: Loop the rope around the hand once keeping the loop slack.
Figure 3: Loop the rope once more around the hand remembering to keep the loop slack.

Step Two:

Figure 4: Take the middle loop and tuck it under the last loop following the direction of the fingers.
Figure 5: Pull the loop back over the other two in the direction of the elbow.
Figure 6: Feed the pulled loop back under the other two loops in the direction of the fingers.

Step Three:

Figure 7: Remove hand from loops and pull the two tails of the rope in opposite directions to tighten the rope and create a neat and strong loop. This loop can be clipped into protection and will remain strong under load stress but can be easily untied after use.
